A Sore Presentation

I finally did my business plan presentation at school today. I rehearsed it for a bit because I know I’ll surely fumble if I were to wing it and go on the fly. I guess my brain just can’t work that quickly and I guess I don’t react to situations quick enough to save the day. Anyway, I remember Rob Thomas saying this in one of those Hot Minute things on radio years ago, “if you work and practice hard, you’ll know your shit. There’s no reason to be nervous if you know your shit”. Something along those lines.
In my case, even if I know my thing inside out, like my songs when I perform them live, I still get the jitters. Good jitters because I always believe that without those jitters, I would have become too complacent and comfortable. Up to a certain extent, I think that jitters equals passion. But Rob is right though, it is way better to know your thing inside out, than not knowing it at all because it shows and everyone can tell whether you are confident or not. Either that or if someone has a very good poker face, that’ll do too, I guess.
Anyway, so the presentation is over and I feel a little less stressed now although I still have tones of work to do, what more with the written business plan and my thesis coming up.
Somehow, playing and singing in front of an audience doesn’t seem as scary as standing in front of a class just talking non stop. As if doing presentations isn’t nerve wrecking enough for me, I went to the doctor yesterday, thinking that I had a bad case of sore throat but it turns out that I had Laryngitis. I won’t go into great detail what Laryngitis is but you can read all about it on wikipedia if you like. My doctor advised me to stay home, rest and don’t talk so that I won’t aggravate it, but I had no choice but to go for my presentations today.

I just got back from catching The Used at Festival Hall. It was surreal just standing there in middle of the sea of Used fans. The mosh pit was mad! It was an awesome show and the sound guys were a great bunch. Although it was an awesome show, I'm having mixed feelings about it and I've got no idea why.
Edit: Maybe it's because I had really high expectations since I've seen all their DVDs and videos on youtube. Maybe I expected them to play much longer than they did. I expected them to play at least 2 hours but they only played close to an hour. All the songs were awesome, and the medley of the old songs were refreshing but maybe I would have preferred a smoother and tighter transition between songs. Like, song after song, bang, bang, bang. That's what Saosin did and it was awesome. Bert created the biggest mosh pit Festival Hall has ever seen and since I knew he was going to do that, I got out of the way. I didn't wanna die in the pit man. I didn't take any good pictures because the last time I was at Festival Hall, they didn't allow cameras although they didn't check at all this time round. Bummer! I took some pictures with my crappy phone camera and the result was crap, no prize for that. I'm sure there will be videos on youtube soon.

I just had to put this video online. The sound quality is really bad but watch the video at 1:30 of the timeline and you'll see why this video is so cool. Oh man, I just realised that the embedded player only has a countdown timer. It's about 00:50. Oh well, just watch it I guess. Haha.

Every time I go to a gig, a little part of the audio engineer in me chips away and suffers a slow death. One knows clearly that the sound pressure levels at a rock concert are extremely high. Exposure to this loudness will just contribute to hearing loss over time, unfortunately. There is a way to protect yourself from going deaf by using earplugs.
However, I don't like using ear plugs because all I'd hear then is the low end only and very little high end, which means I won't be getting the full sonic spectrum of the band's performance. I've tried and I've learnt how to compromise a little though. I'd wear earplugs during the opening bands and take them our during the headliners. It's not the best solution, but until I get used to earplugs fully, this will do.
Yesterday was different at Saosin. I forgot my earplugs and it was a little out of reach to buy myself a pair of earplugs. So I thought to myself, "the three bands that are on for the night are good anyway, going without earplugs won't be that bad".
It turned out that I couldn't be more wrong. I haven't been to gigs for a while now and suddenly going without earplugs just wasn't the best idea. It was way louder than I thought and my ears hurt. Furthermore, I didn't really know what to expect since I've not been to The Billboard before this.
It's almost 24 hours now since the gig and my ears are still ringing. This can't be good. We'll see...

I'm sure they will be pictures of the show that are a million times better on FasterLouder.com.au but this will do for now. I took more videos than pictures during Saosin's set. I'll post the video of Justin doing his 5-round guitar swing with an Ibanez PGM on youtube or something soon.
It was an awesome show and the best part was Beau, Justin and Cove came out at the end to greet the fans. I took a picture with Cove, but somehow it didn't show up on my camera. What a bummer. Oh well...This means that I have to work harder the next time round and for Underoath.

We weren't allowed to take pictures during the show but no one said anything about after the show. This was probably the first circus that I've been to. As far as I can recall, I don't think that I've even been to the Royal London Circus. After going to a Cirque production, I'd won't bother with the rest. This was truly an exciting and thrilling show. It was a good change from the usual rock show, for sure. I wonder what it'll be like to fuse a rock show and this together. Or throw in a musical like production. That'll be interesting to watch.
Talking about musicals, I also went to see Miss Saigon a day after I saw Varakei. A circus and a musical back to back. It was an awesome weekend.

I've just got home from a recording session where I recorded some guitar parts for DJ Perplex, DMC Champ. It's gonna be wicked! Can't wait to hear the end result.
I recorded the parts with my Emily through my new Orange amp. The sound was sweet and we all had a great time. I got my man Benny, DJ B.2WO to engineer the session. I had heaps of fun recording this track and the feel was just right.

Broken Scar presents....The Big Wheel!
I just had to take all those pictures! The lights and colours were just too awesome to not put them onto stills. This is by far the largest Ferris wheel I've been on. The first round was fun but once it got faster, I felt sick in my stomach! As I look at the pictures, I still feel my stomach ache. This was an insane wheel.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all your concern, sending me very sweet and nice messages about my lack of sleep. Here's an update on the "neighbours" situation. After slipping them a note, things have improved. There's still music, but not as loud and it doesn't go on all night. Thank God.
I guess a gentle note is way better than harsh notes, which might have made things even worse. I've learnt a lot from things like these. It's a matter of choice. We could always choose between doing the right thing, which isn't always the easiest to do, or to do the opposite, which seems so easy at the moment when the temper and anger is raging. Doing the right thing, though it seems difficult is always the best solution.
It'll be frustrating though if you do the right thing and still get no cooperation. I just have to thank God that things are better now.
All I have to do now is focus on my assignment that I've been struggling with and hope that I manage to squeeze it out within the given time. I'll definitely post more about the whole business plan. The only question is when that is going to happen.
I've got heaps to say, since I haven't been blogging much these days. I shall find the time to do so, soon. I guess the posts these days are not so music related huh? Well, tell me about it. I wish I had more time to do more music related stuff. Okay, I've gone off tangent, blabbering already. I shall stop now and hope to type a few pages for my project.
