Mourning

The text below is taken from Alda's blog.

"Life’s short..but it was really too short for this lil boy. the boy with the biggest heart.

I’m really deeply sadden to say that Alex, my drummer for cosmic funk express son Ashton, passed away today.

Ashton was born with heart problems. and it was always 50/50 for him to live. His parents did every single thing they could to save their son. but funny is the way of God that for this little boy to survive was not to be. Ashton to me was the most happiest of baby boy I’ve seen. he has this very cute blur and stoned look on his face everywhere he goes.

Alex and BB are great parents and I would have loved to have parents like them. to have brought their kids to gigs and basically is overall damn cool.

But as a dad? I wouldn’t know how Alex felt to have lost his son. I’ve always believe that "no parent should bury their Children". my heart goes out to the Ang Family. and i hope that they will find the strength to pull together in this horrible time.

For those who are interested in donating to Alex's condolence fund, you can contact me @016.3828222 or go to The Guitar Store Hartamas" - Alda Tan

I was at a lost for words when I received an SMS from Alda saying that little Ashton, Alex’s son had passed away. I was speechless, in shock and disbelief. I am still in disbelief, in denial and at a loss for words.

I simply cannot fathom the grief that Alex and BB is going through right now. The idea of that is way too out of reach and yet it is unfolding right in front of me. I don’t know what to think or say.

I am deeply saddened by this and pray that Alex and BB will find strength and that God will continue to strengthen them through this time of grief and loss. I offer my condolences to the Ang family.

I believe that little Ashton is in good hands and everything happens for a reason. Though I never really got the chance to bond with Ashton, he will always remain in my heart.

Head over to The Guitar Store Hartamas or call Alda if you would are interested in donating to Alex’s condolence fund.

Boring Stuff

Okay, I was about to start complaining about how I've spent the whole of yesterday and today staring at nothing but flights of staircases, walls and wires. It was tiring, and I got restless waiting around for a certain problem to be resolved in order to get my work done. I felt claustrophobic due to the very small room that I was in, just staring at the four walls and machines.

But as I write this and reflect, I realize that it is actually not that bad after all. Although I got very physically and mentally drained, doing the work that I do, but it wasn’t the worst of conditions. Although the room was small, it was comfortably air-conditioned. Although the wait was long, I wasn’t bored. Although the flights of staircases seemed as hard as climbing mountains when you have to make so many trips up and down, it turns out to be good exercise for me, and we all know I need it.

At the end of the day, I remind myself to look for the brighter side of things, not dwell on the negative side, whine and complain.

Wow, I’ve been doing more advertisements and promotions here more than I’ve actually been blogging. Man, it’s been such a crazy week. No, wait a minute, make that a crazy few months! I don’t even know what I was so busy about because I don’t even remember half of what has happened and half the people I’ve met over the past few months. It’s not that I am not attentive, it’s just that my brains a fried beyond fried that I can’t even think straight anymore.

It’s like having a million and one things swimming in my head and when I try to focus, it’s just blank.

Like an earlier post somewhere in here, I mentioned that most of my time is spent on doing stuff for the album that hardly even has to be with actually playing the music. Oh well, like I guess I just have to keep pressing on and keep this locomotive moving.

Troubaganger 7th May

From L-R: Zalila Lee (percussions & backup vocals), Jerral Khor (guitar), Kevin & Alda

Pictures taken by Albert

This was an amazing show! We kept the set short and sweet to accomodate the overwhelming response of open mikers, so we played only three songs. Here were the songs:

1. The Bleeding Confession
2. Down
3. Scratch

I wish the set was recorded because it isn't often that Broken Scar performs as a full acoustic band with percussions, bass and extra guitar. A good friend helped record two of the songs on video with my digicam though. While I showed a colleague the videos, he asked, "hey, how did the audience know how to sing your songs?". My answer was, "to be honest, I really don't know. Maybe it's because we did a very quick run through before the song?"

But what I really think happened was the audience were simply so supportive and sporting that they sang along. So here's to the audience at La Bodega that night and all my sweet friends who showed up, you know who you are. You guys and girls were awesome!Cheers!

Post Celebrity Bintang Xfresh

The show was pre-recorded so I wasn't at the studio on Saturday and Sunday. Here are the six independent songs I picked for the show.

1. Dragon Red - Kehendak Naluri
2. Cosmic Funk Express - Pieces
3. Qings & Kueens - We're Gonna Rock You
4. Shelley Leong - Forgiveness
5. Broken Scar -Down
6. Broken Scar - Scratch

I had to plug my songs in there too right? The songs that I picked features the people who are involved in the recording of the Broken Scar debut album, Midnight In St. Kilda. The playlist was only limited to 6 songs. There were so many bands that I wanted to play and it was a really difficult decision. If I had it my way, I'd play all the bands I know! I didn't know they actually put together other songs on their regular playlist on the show as well. Hope you all had fun listening to the show as much as I did being on it. It was heaps of fun.

If I were a DJ, and had my own show, it'll definitely be the independent show!

April Left In Silence

The first thing that came to my head and is still lingering around is, "April Left In Silence"

It's just such an amazing line, don't you think? It could mean anything you want it to mean. Well, at least to me.

Right now, it hit me with the literal. April did leave in silence. It crept out the exit and May entered the room without a trace.

NBT Surprises

Last night offered a very pleasant surprise. I went to see Zal and the gang play at No Black Tie. Zal played the guitar and sang, and featured a very interesting line up of Melina (Tempered Metal) on percussions, Kevin (Qings & Kueens) on double bass and electric bass and Jerral Khor on guitar. It was an awesome performance. Such soothing and catchytunes with plenty of hooks. She even threw in a cover or two that got the whole crowd singing along.

At the end, Zal asked if I wanted to play some songs and I did. The best part about doing something spontaneous is that you don't really know what to expect. I thought I was going to play on my own but it turned out that all of them backed me up instead and we had a spontaneous jam. The best part is that we weren't jamming covers! Woohoo!

Summary

Weekdays and weekends. What difference does it make? They all seem the same to me the days. I am officially exhausted.

So I decided to take some time off and spend some time with my beloved family over the long weekend. We celebrated mom's birthday. We talked. We dined like kings and queens. I took a swim after avoiding it for donkey years. Swimming is definitely not a good activity for a relaxing break. I would have easily traded swimming with chilling in bed and reading a real good book. Even watching terrible movies was tiring! At the end of the weekend, I was more exhausted than rested.

So the album is out and I have taken the role of a salesman. The thing about being an independent musician is that you have to do everything yourself. I knew that. That was what I signed up for. But I didn't quite look ahead far enough to realize that selling the CDs would take up so much time and take me away from what an actual musician does, play and write music. Through all this, I have met so many amazing people and I have learnt a great deal from them. It has been such an excellent journey so far.

There are many individuals that have helped a great deal throughout this entire journey. I couldn't have done it "all" on my own. I'll be creating an extended thank you list in the very near future in honor of these individuals. Thank you all.

The album is in stores in the Klang Valley thanks to the kind retail outlets that were ever so opened and helpful. Thanks to them, the album is on the shelves.

Here's a huge thanks to those who have picked up the album. I hope you are enjoying it.

Thanks to all the media people for all the publicity and the coverage.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
