The Academy Is

I think these guys have now become my reference. Love their production. Love their arrangement. Love their writing. Love the vocal parts. What's there not to love about The Academy Is. If you don't know who they are, you have obviously been living under a shell. These guys are awesome! Just picked up their first and second albums from JB Hi Fi because they were only ten bucks each! Score!

Thankful

Oh man, my arm hurts from playing badminton yesterday. We haven't been playing for three weeks now and I guess I over did it. Played a game too many and now I'm paying for it. It was great fun though as there was a huge turn out and it was a great time hanging out with the gang.

Anyway, I am super stoked because I got a call today and got accepted for a job I applied for. I had a great interview on Friday and after the interview, I had a good feeling that I may get the job. Even if I didn't get the job, it felt great being there at the interview. I even got a ride back to the tram stop from the big boss of the company after.

God is so good that He arranged for this to happen so timely. One of the best things that came out of this was the fact that my friends and family were behind me the whole way. Thanks guys!

Welcome to my life. It's non-traditional. I do all kinds of things and I am loving every bit of it. It's funny how much of a mix things are. I get to produce a radio show, mix live bands, record bands, rock out with my own band, organise events and have a day job all at the same time. I thank The Lord my provider for all this! I can't be more thankful. Praise You Lord!

Super Kev

I felt like a superhero last Saturday when I saved the day by providing an ipod connector cable to the girls hosting the show before us at SYN 90.7. The girls had some problems with their audio playback and I helped fix it simply by swapping the ipod cable. It's nice to chip in and help out whenever I can.

I sometimes feel like over-preparing is a waste of time because 9 out of 10 times I over-prepare or over-pack equipment, things tend to run smoothly. The extra equipment that I had packed would render quite useless. But that leaves us to that one time that something or everything will go wrong and having the right equipment at hand will just make you look like a hero.

I pack extra guitar cables with me when I mix bands. You never know, a guitarist might have rushed to the gig and forgot his cables and when he yells, "Does somebody have a quarter inch guitar cable", I can swoop in and say, "Here you go, Sir". There are also tonnes of other stuff that I pack with me when I mix bands and half of what I pack hardly ever gets used but I am ready when the time calls for it.

I mixed three bands last night at The Espy in St. Kilda. Johnny Uppercut was up first, followed by Madonna and The Final Eclipse headlined the show. I was contemplating whether to bring in all the extra gear or not because I had not mixed at The Espy's basement before. I went back and forth in my mind and I finally decided to lug all that gear down to the show. Boy, was it worth it. The Yamaha SPX 90 II effects unit that I had saved the day. It would have gone well even without it, but it was really the icing on the cake. It made the vocals come alive and made the bands sound awesome. Sometimes, the little things count. I could have just gone with the standard and mic up just the kick, snare and vocals, but I went the extra mile to mic up the kick, snare, toms, guitar cabs and DI-ed the bass. The extra work is definitely worth it. The bands were happy, the crowd was happy and I was definitely happy. All in all, it was a very good night of awesome music.

While The Sun Still Sleeps

It was kind of nice to walk in the city on a late and freezing Melbourne winter night. 6.8 degrees to be precise. There was this sense of stillness in the dense air that you get only about this time. Obviously there is less people roaming the city at this hour and there's definitely less happening compared to the day, but there's more to it than just that. It's a strange feeling and it's too difficult to describe but I will attempt it.

Most people would want to get out of the cold
and seek warmth as fast as they could, but no, not me. There was no urgency to escape this cold winter night. I savored the walk. A part of me felt free, as if I was the king of this city, walking around, checking on my royal subjects. I felt a little bit more invincible because the cold did not break me while the city and the lights were sleeping.

So right now, I will make an exit and join the rest of the city in reverie while the sun still sleeps.

The Week That Was

There's so much that happened this week that it took me away from blogging and left me enough time to just shoot out a few promo posts and messages. It's been a massive week and this is what I got up to. I'm gonna do a Lydia-style post.

Monday
We had the last rehearsal with the band before our big debut on Thursday. Rehearsals are always heaps of fun, mucking around with random jams.

Tuesday
I went to watch Cirque Du Soleil's Dralion with the wife. It was freezing that night and it brought us back to around the same time last year when we watched Varekai. Getting lost in the mystical and magical atmosphere for a while was nice.

Wednesday
Spent some time at the SYN studio working on some pre-production for The Limelight Hour.

Thursday
Broken Scar debut live with the new Melbourne line-up, with Tjin on drums and Julian on bass. We shared the stage with the band, Nobody where we supported headliners for the night, The Vulpine. It was an awesome gig! At least this time I didn't fall into a hole when debuting the band! Click HERE to read about the falling into a hold incident.

Friday
Mixing @ The Arthouse. It was City Escape's EP launch and I mixed Dream On Dreamer, The Vampirates (SA) and City Escape. I spent some time earlier in the afternoon tuning up the PA and foldbacks at The Arthouse to make sure I can push the system hard without feedback. I must say, the start of the night was less stressful but the pressure built up towards the middle of the show. In the end, the show went really well. It turned out that there was a lot of people at the show that I knew. It's been a while and I miss this scene!

Saturday
Went on air for The Limelight Hour and then headed to Richmond AOG to play a solo set. Had Mexican for dinner at Montezuma's. Hung out with a bunch of friends.

Sunday
Mixed at church. The band was on fire and the mix felt right. Got a lot of positive feedback which is always very encouraging. Had a really yummy lunch and hung out more with another group of friends just chatting the whole day away. Happy days!

Unplanned

Sometimes things don't always have to go according to plan. Spontaneous decisions could sometimes lead to some very good times and today was one of those days.

It started off with a simple lunch with a smaller than usual group of friends at a Thai restaurant where the conversations sparked the master plan for a chain of events to follow. The plan was to just hang out until dinner. Lunch was followed by hot chocolate at Koko Black with lots of sweetness and laughter. Then there was time to kill between the hot chocolate and dinner so we ended up playing videos games and board games at Bennie's.

When the time came, we took a short drive, picked up the wife whose freedom we were celebrating and headed out to a scrumptious seafood dinner. We ordered two seafood platters where one was meant to feed two people but it was so huge, it fed four of us each. As if that wasn't fun enough for an awesome Sunday, we adjourned to more video games and board games at Bennie's. We were well entertained till the wee hours in the morning. Through all the conversations, we reminisced about our childhood days, the games we played in school and how mischievous we were. In many ways, we still haven't lost it.

This one's for the good times!

Portable Hard Drive

Can you guess what they are loading into the plane? I got this is an email and I know it's completely random but pretty cool at the same time.

It's a hard disk drive with 5 MB storage.

In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first computer with a hard disk drive. The HDD weighed over a ton and stored a total 5 MB of data.

So start appreciating your 8 GB memory stick which has 1600 times the capacity of this monster!

On Fire

I think my cooking is getting better by the day. Not that it was bad before. It's just been pretty exciting eating in lately as I've been adding new things to my repertoire. The funny thing though is that through these cooking adventures, I've almost burnt down the apartment twice. Nah, I'm just being dramatic. I only set fire to one of the pots but I managed to put it out and the other time was that microwave popcorn incident two years plus ago where the popcorn bag caught fire inside the microwave. It was scary back then but it's hilarious now!

Heard of the band called Boy Sets Fire? I just had to make a band/music reference. I'm a muso after all.

Lifted

Whenever someone walks through the glass door of my apartment building two steps before me, they'd usually hurry up, catch the lift, close the lift doors and head up straight away without waiting. It has happened so many times to me that I got so fed up and thought to myself, "I'm not going to wait for anyone anymore the next time. I'm going to do the same thing just like anyone else". But I guess, deep down, I didn't really want to be just like anyone else.

Today, as I entered the lift, I heard someone come through the glass door. I held the lift, peeked my head out and asked, "going up?". The dude said thanks and added, "wow, I thought you would have closed the door and gone up by now". We had a good laugh and for a moment there I thought, I don't have to be like everyone else. I know it sounds soppy, but it never hurts to show a little kindness.

Blog-O-Rama

I've been blogging a fair bit on The Limelight hour's blog on recording and doing things as an independent musician. Check it out if you like.

Watching One Tree Hill has also inspired me to write more music. It also sparked a new motivation to blog. So yeah, all is well.

I just got back from a few meetings with venues for our shows. Hopefully something will come out of it. Fingers crossed.

CSI 200th Episode

I didn't realise I was such a CSI junkie. I watched the 200th episode of CSI on TV last night and I'm not even sure if it was all that new or whether it was a delayed thing. Oh well, I fell asleep in front of the TV and missed half of it. I must say, it wasn't that great.

Sundays tend to be overloaded with CSI-type series these days. First, there's two CSI's back to back followed by The Evidence. Of course on other days you have Cold Case, SVU and all kinds of others which I don't even know the names of. I guess that's my release, parking my butt in front of the TV for a few hours on a Sunday evening starting the TV marathon with Master Chef right after dinner.
