Oh wow, what an awesome lineup last night at The Limelight @ Miss Libertine. It really helps when you are genuinely excited about something and if you believe in that special something, you just can't go wrong. That's me. I believe in The Limelight and all the artistes and that's why I am always so stoked about these acoustic shows. I get to see a myriad of performers from different backgrounds and musical styles strut their stuff on The Limelight stage on a monthly basis. It's always a big party!
Last night, we had The Take-Off to kick off the show. It was their first time stripping it down and playing an acoustic set as they are usually a full on energetic pop punk band. They closed their set with an awesome anthem, the F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song! It was so refreshing to hear it performed as an acoustic version. Very cool, boys!
Next up was Just For Kicks which took the levels down a few notches, allowing them to bring the crowd on an intimate journey. These guys have become regulars at FVE shows and we're loving them!
I Heart Cusack, who are the masterminds behind the 80 Gigs In 80 Days documentary took on the stage next. This was day 19 of 80 for them and they still have it, rocking out amazing original tunes!
I have to say, although I love everyone who played last night, Matt Collyer And Company (it was just Matt and Jay, minus their drummer for this set) was my favourite. I'm such a big fan of their work. I mean, they are so tight and the harmonies they sing are perfect! Check out Matt's MySpace here: www.myspace.com/mattcollyer
Tomoko, who has recently become a Limelight/Back 2 Basics regular took on the stage and delivered her soulful originals. Her trusty keyboard and powerful voice was all she needed to wow the crowd.
Last but not least, Kak And The Kicks, brand new to The Limelight took the stage and blew everyone away. It was also their first time performing live, in this type of set up. I reckon they did really well. Check out this video of theirs!

I kinda lost track of taking photos and I only managed to take some by the time Katrina hit the stage.
You just got to love Miss Libertine's vibe and crowd. Simply awesome.

VCD Grew A Pair Of Legs

I was looking for my Paul Gilbert instructional video that I had at home and after turning the place inside out, it looks like it's gone missing. I might have to buy another copy on DVD this time around as the old copy I had was on VCD. I mean, who watches VCDs anymore these days?
Thinking of guitars and music, I just wished I had a teleport machine of some sort so I can teleport myself back to Melbourne on Thursday to be at The Limelight at Miss Libertine. It's such a massive line up! I mean there's Kieran Christopherson, Next Dimension, Shafro, Jakk's Azimuth, The Vulpine, Low Speed Bus Chase, Asami and Tim McMillan! The line up is just too good to miss out on. Wish I was there!

We had such a rad time at The Limelight last night mainly because Asami joined Julian and myself to sing a couple of songs which was heaps of fun. Thanks Asami! It was also really cool to see all the Malaysians come out to see Reza, Melina and Zal. I thought most Malaysians would have taken a break to head home but it turns out there's quite a few people that stayed back. Reza, Melina and Zal played an awesome songwriters round! It zapped me back to how things are back in Malaysia.
All the acts were freakin' amazing and I feel absolutely privileged to be a part of this community.
Thanks heaps to everyone who came out to the show to see us! It wouldn't have been the same without you guys. Here's also to new friendships! It was a good time of catching up with everyone. All around, it was a great night.

The disadvantage of living in an apartment is when inspiration sparks at night, I can't do much about it. We're not even talking about the middle of the night or the wee hours of the morning, just plain, 11pm.
In my family house, whenever inspiration hit me, even in my sleep, I'd jump right out of bed, grab the guitar, hit record and belt it out. I'd like to think that my house was sound proof but it wasn't. The neighbours didn't seem to care though and they weren't as petty as the ones I have here in this apartment building.
A few weeks ago, Tjin, Julian and myself were rehearsing in the apartment for our acoustic sets for The Limelight and The Precinct when someone buzzed me from the intercom. I was like, "hmm..we're not expecting anyone, why the heck is my intercom ringing?". I picked up the handset and a voice from the other end said, "could you do us a favour and turn down your music?". Turn down our music? Are you kidding me? We weren't even playing our music half as loud as some of the neighbours that blast techno in the middle of the night, rattling and rumbling the walls!
We were playing acoustic for crying out loud! Me on acoustic guitar, Julian on bass through my tiny Orange amp which isn't even meant to reproduce bass for a bass guitar and Tjin on clean electric guitar through the standard TV speakers (yes, very innovative indeed, Tjin's amp was the TV). To top it all off, the call came at 8pm. You gotta be kidding me right? But hey, we're a co-operative bunch of guys so we finished up what we had to do for rehearsal and "turned it down".
Today, fortunately though, inspiration hit a bit early so I managed to sit down and record a whole guitar part and a heap of vocals. I was pleasantly surprised with the results especially when the song is still so raw and the lyrics weren't even written. I'm treating this as a slightly better version of recording an idea then I'm going to strip it all apart and re-record it as a proper demo. This should be fun. Now, when would be a good time?
